Under the federal regulation that created the system, that number is a percentage of a government reference tire’s wear rate, measured over a convoy test on a roughly 400-mile course driven repeatedly. A grade of 800 means the tire is expected to wear about twice as slowly as a tire graded 400, under identical test conditions.
That grade is not the same as the mileage warranty printed on the box. Manufacturers set the mileage warranty separately, using the treadwear grade as one input alongside their own wear-rate data. It still tracks the same underlying idea: a higher number means more rubber wearing away per mile, spread across a longer expected life.
